**The world’s largest contract chipmaker is exploring ways around rare earth supply risk. Evolution Metals’ expanding Korean magnet business shows why the search for alternatives reaches well beyond defense.**

The machinery that makes the world’s most advanced chips faces a supply risk of its own. On October 22, Reuters [reported](https://wsau.com/2026/10/22/exclusive-tsmc-seeks-factory-equipment-alternatives-to-thwart-chinas-rare-earths-grip-sources-say/?ref=financeherald.com) that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, known as TSMC (NYSE: TSM), had surveyed equipment suppliers about factory motors that work without rare earths, seeking to reduce exposure to China’s export controls.

The discussions are early, with no broad rollout of replacement equipment, according to the report. Their significance reaches beyond any eventual motor design: a company at the center of advanced chipmaking is examining the materials inside the machines that keep its factories moving.

For Evolution Metals & Technologies (NASDAQ: EMAT), which makes rare earth magnets in South Korea, that is a useful lens on the business it is expanding. The search for reliable supply extends into the industrial equipment behind the technology economy, alongside the defense systems and electric vehicles that usually dominate the discussion.

## The Chip Industry Depends on More Than Chips

Rare earth magnets help electric motors deliver powerful, precise movement in compact spaces. The International Energy Agency [identifies](https://www.iea.org/reports/rare-earth-elements/executive-summary?ref=financeherald.com) precision motion, miniaturization and energy efficiency as reasons these magnets matter to automation, robotics and digital technologies. The same materials connect industries that otherwise appear to have little in common.

Making more of them outside China requires an entire manufacturing chain. Mined material must be separated, refined into metal, made into alloys and powders, and manufactured into magnets. The IEA estimates that China produced 94% of the world’s sintered permanent magnets in 2024, compared with 60% of mined magnet rare earths.

That difference explains why another mine alone cannot solve the problem. The concentration becomes greater as the material moves toward the component a factory can actually use. The IEA identifies magnet manufacturing as the main bottleneck in diversifying supply.

TSMC’s reported exploration of substitute motors illustrates one response to that dependence. Building additional sources of the magnets themselves offers another route for industries seeking greater supply resilience.

## Evolution Metals Has Customer Certification Behind Its Expansion

Evolution Metals has been [producing](https://investors.evolution-metals.com/news/emat-20260611-evolution-metals-technologies-corp-validates-commercial-scal?ref=financeherald.com) customer-certified sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets commercially in South Korea. In June, it reported completing quality certification with two global Tier-1 electronics manufacturers across six grades, spanning products for consumer electronics through high-temperature industrial applications.

Those certifications give the expansion a commercial foundation. A customer has to establish that a magnet performs consistently in its intended application before relying on it in production. Evolution Metals’ existing customer approvals provide a starting point for scaling that work.

By October 14, the company [reported](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/10/14/3380683/0/en/evolution-metals-technologies-corp-reaffirms-400-million-to-460-million-fy2027-revenue-guidance-unveils-eight-sintered-magnet-grades-covering-an-estimated-75-of-global-ndfeb-revenu.html?ref=financeherald.com) seven customer-certified grades within an eight-grade portfolio, with the eighth in the final stages of certification. Management estimates those eight grades address categories representing approximately 75% of global sintered NdFeB magnet revenue and 52% of volume.

That product mix is weighted toward higher-value applications. The company’s four super-high-temperature grades, rated to 150 degrees Celsius, incorporate elements such as dysprosium and terbium to retain magnetic strength under heat. Management estimates those categories alone account for roughly 49% of global sintered NdFeB magnet revenue on 30% of volume.

The portfolio therefore gives Evolution Metals several industrial markets to pursue as it adds manufacturing capacity. Its opportunity rests on supplying qualified products into those markets as manufacturers reassess where critical components come from.

## The Next Step Is Turning Capacity Into Shipments

On October 15, Evolution Metals [announced](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/10/15/3381735/0/en/evolution-metals-technologies-corp-takes-delivery-of-additional-ulvac-magnet-production-equipment-unlocking-ten-fold-magnet-capacity-expansion.html?ref=financeherald.com) that 13 of 57 containers of additional ULVAC production equipment had arrived in Pohang, with the rest scheduled before the end of October. Once installed and commissioned, thirteen additional machines are expected to increase annual magnet capacity from approximately 1,000 to approximately 10,000 metric tons, including 6,000 tons of high-performance sintered magnets.

“Installed capacity is what turns customer demand into revenue, and that additional capacity is now arriving on site,” said Christopher Clower, the company’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer.

Evolution Metals has [guided](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/10/09/3378083/0/en/evolution-metals-technologies-corp-raises-fiscal-2026-revenue-guidance-62-at-midpoint-to-11-million-and-reaffirms-460-million-fiscal-2027-outlook.html?ref=financeherald.com) to $400 million to $460 million in fiscal 2027 revenue. That outlook assumes anticipated demand rather than contracted volumes and depends on commissioning, qualification, feedstock and working capital, with the equipment now arriving supporting the planned production ramp.

TSMC’s search brings the wider commercial question into view: how can advanced industries secure the components their factories need? Evolution Metals plans to [showcase](https://investors.evolution-metals.com/news/emat-20261005-emt-to-host-operational-showcase-of-the-largest-high-perform?ref=financeherald.com) Pohang on December 17\. Progress from equipment delivery to qualified shipments could make its expansion an increasingly relevant story across the industries seeking an answer.
