Dr. Ruti Ben-Shlomi, the co-founder and chief executive of LightSolver, a CollPlant company (NASDAQ: CLGN), built her career at the frontier where physics and computing meet. Trained in quantum and atomic physics, she spent years in the lab building ultracold-atom and trapped-ion systems at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The insight that followed was not to give up on the quantum world, but to apply it where it was already working: in light itself.

Her journey ran through three institutions and two decades. She began with a degree in biophysics at Bar-Ilan University, moved to a master's in physics at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where she built an ultracold-atom system from scratch, and completed a doctorate in quantum and atomic physics at Weizmann in 2019, a path [profiled](https://www.weizmann.ac.il/WeizmannCompass/sections/alumni/lighting-up-the-world-of-computation?ref=financeherald.com) by the institute's alumni magazine. Along the way she worked as an engineer at Intel before returning to academia. The through-line, she has said, was a fascination with what happens when matter and light are pushed to their most fundamental states.

That fascination produced real science. In 2020 she was first author on a [paper](https://cris.iucc.ac.il/en/publications/direct-observation-of-ultracold-atom-ion-excitation-exchange/?ref=financeherald.com) in Physical Review A that directly observed a single collision between a strontium ion and a rubidium atom. But the deeper she went into building quantum computers, the more she questioned whether cryogenic quantum computers were the fastest route to useful computing. Light, she realized, is already quantum. Every photon is a single quantum of light, and trillions of them can be made to interact at once in a box that runs at room temperature. [DatacenterDynamics](https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/analysis/quantum-computers-face-a-laser-challenge/?ref=financeherald.com) described her academic years as working on quantum computers "from the ground up" before she "decided that a different solution was worth pursuing."

That approach arrived by chance in the corridors of Weizmann, where she met Dr. Chene Tradonsky, a doctoral student researching how coupled laser arrays could solve hard math problems. A laser array had already solved hard optimization problems up to a [million times faster](https://techround.co.uk/women-in-startups-tech/14-ruti-ben-shlomi-ceo-and-co-founder-at-lightsolver/?ref=financeherald.com) than a conventional computer. Ben-Shlomi brought her hands-on experience building quantum systems and proposed applying lasers to the kinds of problems quantum computers target. Together they founded LightSolver in 2020, and since then developed the first innovative Laser Processing Unit, or LPU.

The LPU is her answer to a question the whole industry is now asking: what comes after the GPU? Today's GPUs do their heavy work with electrons racing through silicon transistors, and they are running into a wall of heat, power and memory bandwidth. Ben-Shlomi's bet is to swap the electrons for photons. The LPU maps a problem onto lasers and lets the physics of light settle into an answer, in a rack-sized machine that needs no cryogenics. She puts the stakes plainly. "Try and do it on a GPU and it will take you till the edge of the universe," she told DatacenterDynamics. And she frames the whole enterprise with a phrase of her own: "I refer to this as 'applicative physics,'" she [told](https://www.laserfocusworld.com/lasers-sources/article/14294930/faces-in-photonics-ruti-ben-shlomi-lightsolver?ref=financeherald.com) Laser Focus World.

That phrase captures the arc of her career. She has described the satisfaction of watching research ideas leave the lab and become something real, and she built LightSolver around that conviction. "We have turned that idea from fundamental physics into a working machine," she said when the acquisition was announced. The recognition has followed: a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer selection in 2025, a place on TechRound's [Women in Startups](https://techround.co.uk/women-in-startups-tech/14-ruti-ben-shlomi-ceo-and-co-founder-at-lightsolver/?ref=financeherald.com) list, and a growing footprint across the photonics and computing trade press.

The market has started to take the claim seriously. [Boeing](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/04/29/3283410/0/en/boeing-and-lightsolver-form-strategic-financial-partnership-to-develop-laser-based-accelerator-for-large-scale-engineering-simulation.html?ref=financeherald.com) formed a strategic financial partnership with LightSolver in April 2026 to develop a laser-based computer for engineering simulation. A joint project with HLRS, a European supercomputing center, [produced](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lightsolver-a-collplant-company-and-hlrs-joint-research-demonstrated-photonic-computing-can-significantly-accelerate-fundamental-hpc-workloads-302889177.html?ref=financeherald.com) peer-reviewed results projecting linear-system solving from roughly 40 to more than 80,000 times faster. The company was [named](https://thequantuminsider.com/2025/06/23/lightsolver-selected-as-2025-technology-pioneer-by-the-world-economic-forum/?ref=financeherald.com) a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer in 2025, and in September 2026 CollPlant [completed](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/collplant-completes-acquisition-of-lightsolver-entering-the-photonic-computing-sector-302868948.html?ref=financeherald.com) its acquisition of LightSolver, bringing the technology to the public markets and [putting](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/collplant-appoints-dr-ruti-ben-shlomi-to-its-board-of-directors-following-closing-of-lightsolver-acquisition-302870018.html?ref=financeherald.com) Ben-Shlomi on the CollPlant board.

For a scientist who spent her career in the lab, the framing of the technology has stayed consistent. "Computing is reaching an inflection point," she [said](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/collplant-is-acquiring-lightsolver--enters-supercomputing-and-photonic-computing-markets-302864902.html?ref=financeherald.com) when the acquisition was announced. "We believe the next great leap will come not from making transistors smaller, but from changing the very medium of computing, from electrons to light." She is careful to keep it approachable too. "Our LPU comes with a compiler," she has [said](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/09/16/3150732/0/en/lightsolver-announces-breakthrough-in-physical-modeling-on-the-lpu-and-new-roadmap-for-optical-analog-pde-solving.html?ref=financeherald.com), "so it doesn't require anyone to understand laser physics."

What comes next is the hard part of any deep-tech story: turning a working machine into a commercial one. LightSolver [targets](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/09/16/3150732/0/en/lightsolver-announces-breakthrough-in-physical-modeling-on-the-lpu-and-new-roadmap-for-optical-analog-pde-solving.html?ref=financeherald.com) commercial availability of the LPU in 2028, with a roadmap that scales from a 100,000-variable system in 2027 to a one-million-variable standard unit by 2029\. The physicist who once assembled quantum computers in the lab is now betting the next processor is built from the quanta of light. It is a bet worth watching.
